Product details

The COMPACT series from SIGMAR marine offers innovative water heaters of 20 to 60 liters, developed specifically for use in recreational boating. The solid 1.5 mm thick stainless steel tank is argon gas-shielded welded. Due to their design, COMPACT boilers are particularly suitable for installation on flat surfaces/ bulkheads. They feature a thermostat and a safety/check valve. The water heater uses the excess heat produced by the engine cooling circuit, shore power supply or energy from a generator. Using excess heat is very economical: water is permanently heated and the excellent insulation of the boiler keeps it hot for a long time. Each boiler has an integrated safety valve which opens for protection from a pressure of 4 bar (58 psi). The hoses can be connected via ½" fittings/nozzles (the connection nozzles are not included).

Tip: The COMPACT heaters are also available with a second heat exchanger - so in addition to excess cooing water engine heat, an existing water heating system can also be used to pre-heat the water and maximise the energy used by the engine. Heaters with a second heat exchanger have an additional thermostat to control a hot water heating system.

Choose a boiler with a second heat exchanger

  • if you plan to utilise waste heat from more than one engine,
  • or to install an auxiliary burner to heat the water when the engine is not running.

Hält Wasser nicht lange warm
After many years I had to replace the boiler and decided on the Sigmar 30L. Easy to install and connect, but the storage of warm water is insufficient. Once heated, the water is only lukewarm after 24 hours.

gut, einfach zu installieren, einige Konstruktionsdefizite
Now I can give a qualified opinion after I opened the boiler (with 2 heating coils) yesterday after 18 months of use to inspect the anode. As is the case with most products, this one also has some fundamental design flaws 1.) The magnesium anode is tapered towards the fastening point from the diameter to the thread (M5 or M6). Unfortunately, the thread protrudes quite far from the opposite side (base plate of the heating register). Therefore, the anode quickly wears off and then falls to the ground. I found the anode at the bottom of the boiler surrounded by Mg sludge that was formed by the anode. The new anode will not stay long in the intended place, it is to be hoped that the anode lying on the ground or the sludge that forms will also receive the protective effect. 2.) The heating coil (I use 1 for the machine, 1 for the generator) are not attached inside the boiler and swing around freely. Under the harsh conditions of a sailing yacht, the heating registers hit each other. In general, changing the anode is quite straightforward. Disconnect the cable, open the screw, pull out the heater. Of course, the O-ring should be replaced! It is also advantageous not to install the boiler horizontally, but rather at a height of approx. 20 cm on the side opposite the connections. Thus, the air bubble that forms becomes smaller and the volume of water larger. When installed horizontally, the part above the extraction pipe is filled with air that cannot escape, which is why the volume is reduced by this proportion. Personally, I would like better insulation. We are sailing in the tropics and the boiler continues to heat the already warm room. If the manufacturer chooses a different way of attaching the anode and the heating registers at least get spacers from one another, the part would be perfect. Oh yes, it would still be ideal if the connecting sleeves and any hydraulic thermostatic valve (not included) were made from the same material as the boiler is made of (stainless steel, 316?)
