- Marine radio equipment and handheld radios for boats -
No matter where you go with your boat, whether on inland waterways or the open sea, a marine radio should definitely be with you on board. Not only does a marine radio serve to communicate with other boats, harbours and coastal radio stations, a VHF radio is also an important safety device to have on board.
Radios for use on rivers and lakes are often also called UBI radios in Germany. UBI stands for 'UKW-Sprechfunkzeugnis für den Binnenschifffahrtsfunk', and is the VHF broadcasting certificate required for inland navigation. On German inland waters, VHF radios for inland waterways must be permanently installed radios, handheld radios do not meet the requirements for inland waters. Inland radios use the ATIS (Automatic Transmitter Identification System) channel group and are therefore often referred to as ATIS radios. The transmitting power of ATIS radios is limited to 1 W in order not to interfere with surrounding radio traffic. Want to buy a marine radio? Choose from any of the radios in our range! All VHF marine radios in our shop can be used on inshore waterways.

Marine radios for use outside inland waters use the INT channel type, which stands for International. Marine radios transmit at 25 W with a significantly higher power than inland radios. It is advisable to choose a marine radio with DSC function. DSC stands for Digital Selective Calling. VHF marine radios with DSC make it easy for you to make a distress call in an emergency, and you can also radio other boats directly using their DSC number. All marine radios available from us have an integrated DSC function.

Choose a DSC marine radio with GPS if you want quick and easy help in an emergency. GPS is built in with these types of radio, meaning that in the event of an emergency at sea, your current position is automatically transmitted via the distress call. If you choose a marine radio that does not have GPS, this data must be entered manually.

A radio with AIS helps to increase safety and avoid collisions at sea. These radios have an integrated splitter and can receive signals via a VHF radio antenna, saving space and the need to install a second VHF antenna. You can read about all the advantages of AIS in our AIS guide. Use our filter function to select all marine radios with AIS in our range and find the one for you.

Some radios also come with an AIS transponder. These radios not only have a built-in AIS receiver, they also have an AIS transmitter to send their own data.
