- Factors that should be considered when buying antifouling paint for your yacht -
Which antifouling is best for which underwater area?
Which antifouling is the right one for my sports boat?
When choosing the right type of antifouling for your hull, you should try to obtain the best possible information beforehand, e.g. from a seller or your home port. Choosing the right antifouling depends on the conditions in the area, so no antifouling paint is universally suitable for each propeller / drive. You should find out which underwater paint was used by the previous owner of a used boat. Make sure you find out which antifouling was used before taking ownership of any second-hand vessel. In addition, legal regulations must be considered. The application and use of some types of antifouling is prohibited in some countries because antifouling products contain biocides.
Which antifouling should be chosen depends on what was applied previously. Self-polishing antifouling is mostly used on slower boats and sailing boats, hard antifoulingis intended for faster motor yachts. Thin film antifouling does not work by releasing active ingredients into the water, but by creating a very smooth surface that is difficult for organisms to attach to.
The choice of antifouling also depends on the water temperature. Whether in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean, inland waters or Lake Constance - depending on where you navigate, other pollutants could find their way to your hull. Waters with a high water temperature, greater levels of pollution and low water exchange or current lead to increased fouling of the hull and more marine organisms.
The effectiveness of underwater paints depends on whether they have been chosen correctly and, of course, on the bioactive ingredients. Unfortunately, not all antifouling paints on the market are environmentally friendly. Versions such as Hempel's Silic One, for example, are referred to as biocide-free antifoulings and have low VOC values (Volatile Organic Compounds). These antifouling systems are also good for the environment - or at least friendlier.
