...that water does not help at all as a remedy against the spiciness of chilis? In case you ate too many chilis and need to put out the flames in your mouth you should definitely not use water, but rice, white bread or potatoes, for example. This is due to their high content in starch. Milk also helps as it contains a protein called Casein, which kind of washes away the spicy Capsaicin. Eating cucumbers is another common way to cope with spicy food in Thailand and Indonesia.
...that Christopher Columbus discovered the chili pepper in South America and took it to Europe around 1492.
However the plants he supposed to be a red variety of the genus Piper were in reality a chili plant which is part of the shade plants. Only in the 17th century the French botanist Joseph Pitton de Tournefort corrected this misnomer.

that your chili plant's yield will be higher if you remove its first flower? Can that be true? Indeed it is a fact: The first flower "the King flower" grows on the first Y-branch of the plant and stops the plant from further growth. By taking away the king flower the plant will continue growing and developing more tasty chilis.
Chili, Chilli, Chili Peppers...
There are different ways of spelling and calling them - but it all stands for the same thing: Hot or less hot peppers. It was the Aztecs who first used the word Chile for different types of peppers. According to the taste or shape of each chili the Aztecs modified the name. The "Chile de Arbol", for example, has been named after a tree.
...that there is even a world cup for eating chili peppers?
This competition attracts thousands of spectators and around 400 participants, each year. Chili peppers with spice heats ranging from 0 to enormously spicy 500.000 Scoville are being eaten at this event. Participants take this world cup very seriously and have often been preparing themselves for weeks.
about the smallest chili on earth? It is only the size of a tip of a match! The tiny "Firecracker Pequin" is simular to the wild, original type of chilis and it is extremely spicy. A chili that is less spicy, but several times bigger is the Mexican variety "Big Jim". It´s length of over 30 cm makes it one of the biggest chilis in the world.
...what makes chilis so spicy?
This is due to one of it´s ingredients: The alkaloid "Capsaicin". It is itself colourless and bland, but very well known for it´s spiciness. The alkaloid Capsaicin is heat- and cold-resistant and in case of a high intake it will make your body release adrenaline.
...that the outer layer of the chili pepper is brilliant camouflage?
The chili's outer layer not only serves as a protection, but it also is a warning towards its surroundings. "Be careful, I am extremely hot!" communicates via its strong red colour. The outer shell contains the entire colouring and also prevents the pepper from drying out. A rule of thumb is: The stronger the colour of the chili, the more spicy it will be.
that chilis can already be harvested once they are still green?
In case the frost come too early and your chilis are not yet red, DO NOT WORRY! You can harvest them early. Even chilis that are not ripe yet will ripen at room temperature and will get their natural colour. The plant is even able to hibernate and bear fruit in the following year.
that in the South of Italy there are "chili balconies"?
Making good use of the slightly salty sea breeze chilis are dried on the balcony in Italy. In so-called "Filas" they are suspended from balustrades or house walls. The washing, of course, is still put on the balcony as well and gets a slight and pleasant smell of chili. Some residents even span a line to start a chili exchange between neighbours.
