Exceptional glide but non-existent antifouling properties!!!
First of all, I would like to point out that the boat I am talking about below is located in the Mediterranean (Côte dAzur).
I carried out the application at the end of summer 2022 on a new hull (dedicated two-component primer two layers of Hempaspeed TF antifouling).
The glide is exceptional but the antifouling properties are absolutely non-existent!!!
The 2022 season was very short (new boat launched at the end of the season). This is followed by a few outings at the start of winter with an already very dirty hull, then wintering afloat.
May 2023 fairing. The hull is extremely dirty and covered in concretions. However, high pressure cleaning restores the shell to new condition (no shell has managed to penetrate the product).
I'm doing some touch-ups on the flotation with an unopened 0.75l pot that I had left.
The cleaned hull is perfectly smooth and shiny, I put it back in the water and find that exceptional glide that I had on the first application.
After 3 weeks, with sunshine and increasing water temperature, the hull is already covered with thick concretions that the mechanical action of the moving water absolutely cannot eliminate (the boat's cruising speed is 20 knts).
The 2023 season is thus marred by catastrophic performances and increased fuel consumption due to permanent dirt on the hull. The only solution is long apnea sessions to remove the concretions using a spatula. As there is no antifouling action the operation must be repeated daily
I would like to point out that there is absolutely no question here of a lack of application, all the manufacturer's recommendations have been respected.
I contacted Hempel France and spoke with the manager of the marine division, it emerged that everything I have just described is perfectly normal!!! This product is not at all suitable for hot and very salty waters (like the Mediterranean), which is why Hempel does not market this product in France!
I am therefore quite unhappy with SVB which markets this product to its French customers. It is a fairly expensive product and takes a long time to apply, and the conversion to another antifouling will require costs and a significant amount of work (certainly SilicOne in my case, which according to Hempel France, is suitable for my location).
