The PLB radio buoy (Personal Locator Beacon) is a personal distress beacon that functions in the same way as an EPIRB.  With a PLB distress beacon, the current position data of the person in distress at sea is transmitted via satellite to a rescue control centre, such as the DGzRS in Bremen. There, the data received is evaluated and forwarded worldwide to the search or rescue services responsible.
