EPIRBs are distress beacons for life rafts or ships which send an emergency message via satellite to a rescue control centre. The received emergency call is then further coordinated in the rescue control centre. EPIRB maritime emergency radio buoys have a worldwide range and are virtually interference-free in transmission. Signals can be transmitted outside the range of voice or Morse radio. EPIRB is the abbreviation of Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon. EPIRBs are also known as emergency radio beacons or marine distress beacons.
