- Add a thimble or eye for more stability -
Usually when away from your home marina in a foreign port, using a knot to secure the boat should suffice, as travellers rarely leave the deck for long periods of time. Many skippers prefer the flexibility of a mooring line without an eye splice when travelling and use a knot for tying the boat to the dock. Not so in the home port when setting up permanent dock lines. Here, experts recommend a line with a thimble or eye that is sized to fit perfectly. The higher the quality of the product and the better the fit, the less likely it is to squeak, rattle or chafe. Unlike a knot, a splice does not affect the breaking load of the line. Knotting a line can reduce its stability by up to 50 %, likewise if the splice is not done professionally.
On the other hand, docklines or breastlines that are spliced with an eye or thimble can also be useful in foreign harbours, as they make it easier to attach rope to a ring on the jetty, around a bollard or to a mooring dolphin. A further advantage eye splices have over knots is that you won't have to carry oversized lines to compensate for the lower breaking load caused by a knot. For all boat owners who do not want to splice an eye themselves, we offer a wide selection of prespliced LIROS mooring lines - with different sized eye splices, with or without leather sheath, mooring lines with thimble (simple or reinforced) as well as mooring lines with compensators.
