Find the perfect underwater paint for your sports boat in our Antifouling Online Shop! Without protection, aquatic organisms could settle on the hull, such as barnacles, algae or mussels. This causes drag, as the boat becomes heavier and heavier and the sailing speed is reduced. As a result, fuel consumption increases, leading to greater costs. For this reason, applying antifouling is a must for every boat! SVB offers a wide range of different types of antifouling from manufacturers such as INTERNATIONALHEMPELSEATECBOERO and more to give your boat the best possible fouling protection. Which antifouling is the right one for my boat?

- Factors that should be considered when buying antifouling paint for your yacht -

The condition and type of existing coats of paint

It is very important to know or find out which type of antifouling was applied last. If it is still in good condition, you might be ok with just carrying out some boat maintenance and sanding the surface a little, then apply new coats in order to renew the anti-fouling capabilities. SVB offers a wide range of antifouling paints in various colours from renowned manufacturers, such as INTERNATIONAL, HEMPEL, SEATEC, TIKAL and JOTUN - fast, affordable, always in stock and with the best value for money. If the existing antifouling is in such poor condition that it has already become porous and is flaking off, the old antifouling must be completely removed before new antifouling is applied. You can find out how to do this in our video on removing antifouling.

Which underwater area should be protected?

Which antifouling is best for which underwater area?

No antifouling coating can be universally applied to any underwater area. In addition to hull antifouling, there is also antifouling specifically for metallic propellers and Z-drives. This area requires a special antifouling coating, which is usually supplied in spray bottles. Similarly, not every antifouling is suitable for aluminium or steel. When buying anti-fouling, you should make sure that it matches the material of your boat. The fairway and the type of sports boat (sailboat, motorboat or trailer boat) also play a role when it comes to choosing the right antifouling.

Choosing the right antifouling

Which antifouling is the right one for my sports boat?

When choosing the right type of antifouling for your hull, you should try to obtain the best possible information beforehand, e.g. from a seller or your home port. Choosing the right antifouling depends on the conditions in the area, so no antifouling paint is universally suitable for each propeller / drive. You should find out which underwater paint was used by the previous owner of a used boat. Make sure you find out which antifouling was used before taking ownership of any second-hand vessel. In addition, legal regulations must be considered. The application and use of some types of antifouling is prohibited in some countries because antifouling products contain biocides.

Self-polishing antifouling, hard antifouling or thin-film antifouling?

Which antifouling should be chosen depends on what was applied previously. Self-polishing antifouling is mostly used on slower boats and sailing boats, hard antifoulingis intended for faster motor yachts. Thin film antifouling does not work by releasing active ingredients into the water, but by creating a very smooth surface that is difficult for organisms to attach to.

The water and conditions in which you navigate

The choice of antifouling also depends on the water temperature. Whether in the North Sea, Baltic Sea, Mediterranean, inland waters or Lake Constance - depending on where you navigate, other pollutants could find their way to your hull. Waters with a high water temperature, greater levels of pollution and low water exchange or current lead to increased fouling of the hull and more marine organisms.

The quality and environmental compatibility of the antifouling

The effectiveness of underwater paints depends on whether they have been chosen correctly and, of course, on the bioactive ingredients. Unfortunately, not all antifouling paints on the market are environmentally friendly. Versions such as Hempel's Silic One, for example, are referred to as biocide-free antifoulings and have low VOC values (Volatile Organic Compounds). These antifouling systems are also good for the environment - or at least friendlier.
