Self-polishing antifouling, also called Self Polishing Copolymer, SPC, has special self-polishing properties. Nowadays, this is considered the most modern technique. This type of antifouling is water-soluble and becomes thinner and thinner as you pass through the water, so there is always a fresh coating of biocide on the surface. Not recommended for fast sports boats, as rub-off can be too strong, which could completely dissolve the coating before the season is over. In this case you should use hard antifouling.

Self-Polishing Antifouling

- A unique system -

Find the right self-polishing antifouling for your boat in our Antifouling Shop. You will find antifouling products from renowned manufacturers such as International, Hempel and Seatec. The antifouling paints are also available in different antifouling colours.

How does self-polishing antifouling work?

Self-polishing antifouling is based on a copolymer binding agent. This triggers a controlled and slow chemical reaction on the paint surface in the water. The biocides combined with the copolymers form a unique system that protects your sports boat from fouling. The rate at which the biocides are released is kept constant and low by the slow chemical reaction.
As the self-polishing antifouling always carries an active biocide layer on the surface, no thick layers build up over the years.

How to apply: brush or roller?

Self-polishing antifouling can be applied with a brush or roller. The advantage of using a roller for the underwater paint is that the antifouling is spread more evenly over a larger area. A brush is ideal for areas that are difficult to access, such as the bow thruster. However, there is a risk that individual fibres may come loose, making the antifouling more permeable. When applying a new coat, an antifouling product of equal quality can be applied directly to the surface of the previous antifouling layer. It is recommended to make the existing surface dust and grease-free.
