- Alternative drives for inflatable boats -
The first electric boat motor was developed as early as 1839 by the German engineer Moritz Hermann von Jacobi, and it was used to power the paddle wheels of a small boat. At that time, steam engines were the first to be used to power boats. However, thanks to new battery technologies, especially lithium-ion batteries, electric boat engines have been considerably improved in terms of range and performance and are now becoming more and more popular.
An electric outboard is a motor driven by battery power, with the advantage here that no petrol or oil can leak into the water. This makes them an environmentally friendly alternative to petrol outboards. Electric outboards with rechargeable batteries need only be charged from the mains. E outboards usually have tiller steering, but can also be operated by remote steering.
Electric outboards are the ideal solution for dinghies, inflatable boats up to 2.50m, small sailboats up to 7m and dinghies. More and more electric motors are also being used in the professional sector on small ferries and water taxis.
Quiet, low-emission and low-vibration electric boat drives are best suited for use in nature reserves and lakes where combustion engines are prohibited. On Lake Starnberg, for example, only electric motors are allowed. E-outboards are also becoming increasingly popular for fishing, especially on small motor & inflatable boats, due to their low noise levels. Buy an affordable electric outboard now and quietly make a bigger catch!
Our range of Minn Kota outboards are not suitable for use in salt water. However, we are able to order Minn Kota motors that are suitable for salt water on request. If you want to use your motor in salt water, you should always go for a Torqeedo motor. Torqueedo outboards can be used in both freshwater and saltwater.
1. How powerful must an electric motor be?
The power an electric outboard should have depends on how you want to use it and where. For example, do you take it easy or prefer faster speeds? How many passengers are in the boat, how strong is the current etc.
SVB offers a wide range of electric outboards in various power ratings and shaft lengths for different boat types.
2. Which electric outboard is right for which boat?
The type of electric outboard suitable for a particular boat depends not only on how and where you want to use it, but also on the size and weight of your boat. Hull features and environmental conditions, however, also play an important role in the selection process.
Electric boat motors are ideal for dinghies & inflatables up to 2.50m, small sailboats up to 7m and dinghies. There is also a growing trend in electric outboards used for sailing boats, small ferries and water taxis. Our Temo electric motor is suitable for boats up to three metres and a weight of 500 kg. For boats up to 750 kg, for example, 1 hp electric motors such as the Torqeedo Travel 503 can be used. For dinghies and daysailers up to 1.5 tons, electric motors with 3 hp, such as the Torqeedo models Travel 1003, 1003 C and 1103 C, can be used. You can find more information in the respective product descriptions of each individual electric outboard.
An E outboard motor should weigh at least 3-5 lbs per 50 kg boat weight (complete incl. persons)
Tip: If in doubt, we recommend opting for the next largest electric motor to be on the safe side.
