- What to know if you want to buy a fish finder -
All anglers will love to see what's going on under the surface of the water. A boat depth finder or fish finder provides a view of the structure beneath the surface and informs anglers and boaters of the depth in which they are operating their vessel. Find fish and the types of places they'll hide faster, such as promosing holes or depressions. Sonar fishing is a surefire way to increase your chances of catching fish. Modern and highly precise sonar technology, which has long been used in professional deep-sea fishing, is now available to amateur anglers and can do much more: the high-tech devices enable the angler to identify schools of fish, or even individual fish, with great precision, and they reliably guide the angler to previously marked fishing spots or safely guide him to the starting point.
- Yachting vs. angling: One technology for different interests -
Fishfinders and depth sounders work in exactly the same way. Both transmit sounder pulses that bounce off obstacles in the water such as rocks, fish or the bottom and back to the boat. These are then displayed on a screen using special software. Sound wave technology is used in shipping and sailing to navigate and avoid grounding. However, because it can also be used to detect fish, manufacturers have specialised in producing fishfinders that transmit pulses with a higher-frequency narrow beam, allowing the fishfinder to detect smaller targets but at a reduced depth. The higher transmission frequency produces a higher resolution echo coming back to the boat. Because anglers rarely have any nautical training and may find it difficult to interpret data from a depth sounder, the display is optimised - for example, the display shows fish as symbols instead of crescents or it sounds an alert when fish are detected. Today, fishfinder technology has been developed to include chartplotters and GPS (GPS fish finder) and other navigation systems that make locating marked fishing hotspots easier than ever.
