- Long or short, with or without braces -
Finding the right sailing trousers is not always easy. When choosing, you should consider both performance and fit, in equal measure. Because whether it's women's sailing trousers or men's sailing trousers, these are among the most worn items of clothing on board. As with all sporting activities, good sailing trousers should therefore be made of functional material, with good breathability and comfort.
So, before buying, you should think carefully about where and how you will use your yachting trousers. For important information on materials and selection, see our sailing clothing guide.
The fit
Special attention should be paid to the right fit. Sailing trousers should be versatile and flexible and not hinder your movement, this is especially important in sail racing. But freedom of movement is a must for all types of men's sailing trousers, since freedom of movement means high comfort and a better feeling when worn.
Material
To ensure that the sailing trousers do not tear during fast movements and have a high level of durability, they are made of very robust materials and also have abrasion-resistant reinforcements in particularly hard-wearing areas such as the rear and knees.
Sadly, the sun doesn't always shine and you often get wet, especially in offshore areas, so men's sailing trousers should not only be water-repellent but also waterproof. Quick-drying materials are also an advantage if you don't want to catch a cold on your next trip. In addition to good resistance, a good fit and waterproofness, it is also advisable to choose sailing trousers for men that are breathable. High breathability prevents the accumulation of body moisture and thus unwanted wetness on the skin. These qualities are made possible, for example, by 2-layer systems of polyamide and polyurethane and technical fabrics specially developed for outdoor watersports by manufacturers. .
Safety
For your own safety, sailing trousers often have reflectors that provide more visibility in poor light conditions, or the trousers themselves are made in signal colours.
Another thing to consider when choosing sailing trousers for men is workmanship, features and sometimes also colour.
Individual fit/individual size
A pair of sailing trousers should have individually adjustable ankles and braces so that they can be made to fit perfectly. Sailing trousers with adjustable braces will give you a more secure fit and prevent them from slipping off, which can be extremely annoying . But a salopette such as those made by Musto or Gill, among others, also offer advantages. The high cut allows you to wear it without a top, so you won't get wet when the first wave hits you.
Pockets
For carrying important items such as keys or mobile phones when going ashore, small pockets on the trousers are indispensable. Most men's sailing trousers have at least one waterproof zipped pocket on the outside of the thigh.
Design
Their maritime design and fresh or even neutral colours make the sailing trousers a fashionable garment on board.
